Making Room for What’s Next: A Guide to Keeping, Donating and Digitizing

Whether you’re preparing for a move, sending a child off to college, merging households, settling into retirement, or simply embracing a new chapter, we know this season of life is about so much more than relocating your belongings. It’s about stepping into a new lifestyle, and we want that next chapter to feel exciting, not overwhelming. Taking a little time to look through what you own before the boxes come out can make the whole process feel lighter and more manageable. The key is knowing what to keep, what to donate, and what to digitize, and we’re happy to walk through it with you.
Start With Your New Lifestyle in Mind
Before you dive into closets, garages, and storage rooms, take a moment to picture what you’re actually moving toward. Are you downsizing into a cozier space, spreading out into a bigger one, or settling into a home built around a different daily rhythm? Getting a clear picture of this next chapter makes every decision about what to bring along feel a little easier. As you sort, try asking yourself:
- Do I use this regularly?
- Does this fit the lifestyle I’m moving toward?
- Would I buy this again today?
- Could someone else benefit from this more than I do?
Once you have a feel for where you’re headed, you can start sorting your things into three simple categories: keep, donate, and digitize.
What to Keep
This will likely be where most of your things end up, and that’s a good thing. Furniture that’s still functional, items that hold meaning, or pieces that would be hard to replace all belong here. A good rule of thumb: if something is essential or gets used often enough to be part of your everyday life, it’s worth bringing along. Family heirlooms, prized possessions, and important documents are easy calls, and we always recommend packing and storing those together so they’re easy to find and keep safe. Beyond that, let your hobbies, work, and the activities you’re excited to carry into this next stage guide the rest.
As you decide what makes the cut, we always encourage clients to think quality over quantity. What comes with you to your new home should feel meaningful to you and your family, not just add to the pile.
What to Donate
If you find you’ve collected more than you need, even things still in wonderful condition, donating is a lovely way to lighten your load while making room for a fresh start. It’s also a nice way to give back to your community during a time of change. Clothing is usually the easiest place to begin: anything that no longer fits, no longer feels like you, or won’t suit your new climate. If you’re moving somewhere warmer or cooler, that’s worth keeping in mind as you sort through your closet. From there, take a look at toys, sports equipment, and other items that haven’t seen much use, along with any larger furniture that won’t fit your new space or won’t be needed if your next home comes furnished.
If you come across things that haven’t been touched in years but are still in good shape, local community centers and shelters would be glad to give them a second life.
What to Digitize
Today’s technology makes it wonderfully easy to hold onto memories without needing the physical space to store them. Digitizing lets you protect what matters most while making room for what’s ahead. This doesn’t mean parting with your photo albums or years of family history. It simply means finding a way to carry those memories with you without the weight of extra boxes. Photos, home videos, and old DVDs are great candidates for scanning and saving to a laptop or hard drive. Keep the physical copies that mean the most to you, and let the digital versions take care of the rest. The same goes for old documents, recipe collections, school projects, or artwork passed down through your family. It really comes down to your own connection to each piece.
It’s also worth digitizing anything that’s starting to show its age. A digital copy is a wonderful way to make sure those memories are protected for years to come.
Moving into a new lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to bring everything with you, and that’s okay. Sorting through what to keep, donate, and digitize can turn one of the most daunting parts of a move into one of the most freeing, leaving you with a home that truly fits the life you’re stepping into. Wherever this next chapter takes you, we’re here to help make the journey feel a little lighter..
