National Mimosa Day – May 16, 2021

Brunch enthusiasts and cocktail fanatics mark your calendars — May 16 is National Mimosa Day! This classic mixed drink, which is equal parts brut champagne and fruit juice (usually orange juice), has become a brunch staple and a popular drink at weddings. The drink dates back to the 1920s and most likely got its name from the a yellow flower native to Australia. With a variety of ways to add a twist to this cocktail, it’s fun and easy to celebrate this drink we all find mimo-so-good!

NATIONAL MIMOSA DAY ACTIVITIES

  1. Brunch!

Mimosas and brunch go together like eggs and bacon, pancakes and syrup, or orange juice and…champagne. May 16 falls on a Thursday this year but don’t let a workday stop you from enjoying this combination. If you can’t pull off brunch then have breakfast for dinner! The promise of French toast and mimosas will help you get through the day.

  2. Create a new twist on an old favorite

Mimosas don’t always have to be made with orange juice. Try substituting it with your favorite fruit juice instead. Cranberry, grapefruit, and blueberry are great with champagne, but get creative! You can toss a few berries or fruit slices in as well to give it extra flavor and make it look even prettier.

  3. Make non-alcoholic mimosas

If you are under 21 or would simply prefer a non-alcoholic option then you’re in luck! Mimosas are just as tasty and refreshing when substituting ginger ale for champagne. Sparkling juices, such as sparkling apple cider, are also good substitutes for champagne.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL MIMOSA DAY

  1. They’re easy to make

Many cocktails require several ingredients, shakers, and other items that many of us don’t have in our kitchens. Making a mimosa is quick and simple! Pour your chilled juice of choice in a glass (a champagne flute if you’re feeling fancy) and then pour in the champagne. Voila!

  2. We feel fancy when we drink them

Despite how simple they are to make, there’s something about a mimosa that just makes us feel classier. Maybe it’s the champagne flute, or the champagne itself. Maybe it’s the pretty color and light, bubbly taste. Maybe it’s how pretty the name sounds. Whatever it is, it can definitely elevate a “bubble bath” to a “luxury bath.”

  3. It’s a versatile drink

While mimosas most frequently appear at weddings, on flights for First Class Passengers, and the beloved brunch, it’s not limited to these occasions. They’re great on a hot summer day. Cozy snow days stuck in the house become even better when snuggled up with the drink. They’re a lovely drink to have on holidays such as New Year’s Eve. The mimosa is a great, year round drink that can make any occasion better.
