On Friday, September 6th only, the Super Glow Show will start at 5:15 a.m., with 50 or more of the event’s nearly 100 balloons lighting up on the field at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. On Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th, the traditional Glow Show will include a half-dozen or so balloons firing up their burners while remaining on the ground. This year also brings new shaped balloons, a mobile app and a commemorative beer. Future plans also call for an expansion of the event into four days. Newcomers Hummingbird Jewel and Spider Pig will join balloons shaped like a butterfly, ladybug, soccer ball, Smokey Bear, stagecoach and more, said executive director Pete Copeland.
“They stand the balloons up, choreographed to music, then let them down,” Copeland said.
The Friday show will precede the mass ascension of all the balloons at about 6:45 a.m, and last about 20 minutes. On Saturday and Sunday, the Glow Show will begin at 5 a.m. followed by the Dawn Patrol, the ascent of about six balloons lit from within into the predawn sky, then the mass ascension. The Super Glow Show is part of a plan for 2014 to expand the balloon race’s Friday schedule and also add a race day on Thursday — a day that traditionally features only a few balloons taking off for sponsors and media.
“We want to expand Thursday and Friday,” Copeland said at a balloon race news conference Wednesday. “We can’t put more (special features) on Saturday.”
The 2013 balloon race poster was also unveiled Wednesday, designed by Steven Richardson of International Game Technology. The 2013 Balloon Race also has a new mobile app available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app will give balloon race visitors access to last-minute changes in the event schedule and help them find particular balloons, pilots, vendors and sponsors, said designer Chris Griffin of Elucidate Inc.
